Cyril Hovorun will deliver a keynote lecture at the GNPT VI Consultation
Archimandrite Cyril Hovorun, a Ukrainian Orthodox priest, is Professor of Ecclesiology, International Relations and Ecumenism at the University College Stockholm in Sweden.
He began studies in theoretical physics before moving to theology at the theological seminary and academy in Kyiv. Passing through further studies at the Kapodistiran University in Athens, he defended his PhD at Durham University in the United Kingdom on “Will, Action and Freedom. Christological Controversies in the Seventh Century” (published 2008).
Hovorun taught theology at theological academies in Kyiv, Moscow, and Minsk, among others. He was a research fellow at Yale and Columbia Universities (USA), visiting professor at the University of Münster (Germany) and fellow at the Chester Ronning Centre for the Study of Religion and Public Life at the University of Alberta in Canada. He has lectured at over fifty universities, including the Universities of Heidelberg and Munich (Germany), the Free University of Amsterdam (Netherlands), the University of Oxford (UK), the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Princeton Theological Seminary, the Myanmar Institute of Theology, and the Institute of Philosophy and Social Theory (Serbia).
He is a member of the American and European Academies of Religion, the Ukrainian Patristic Society, which he presides, and the International Association of Patristic Studies.
A prolific writer, he is the author of Eastern Christianity in Its Texts (London: T&T Clark, 2022); Political Orthodoxies: The Unorthodoxies of the Church Coerced (Minneapolis: Fortress, 2018); Scaffolds of the Church: Towards Poststructural Ecclesiology (Eugene, OR: Cascade, 2017); Meta-Ecclesiology, Chronicles on Church Awareness, (New York: Palgrave Macmillan, 2015, and other books.
