Conference and book launch about David Tracy's theology

The esteemed North American theologian David Tracy, born in 1939, recognized as one of the most influential Roman Catholic theologians in English over the past fifty years, will offer insights into his mature theological and cultural vision. The new book provides a fresh assessment of Tracy's work, with an international cohort of experts introducing the core themes of his thought. Tracy will also share a short response and the edited text of a previously unpublished and recent lecture.

On-line conference

The "Envisioning Theology with Many Centres/Centers" serves as the backdrop for an upcoming international theological conference scheduled for Monday, December 4, 2023. Three young theologians and philosophers of religion—Simone Kotva (University of Oslo), Isabella Bruckner (Pontifical Athenaeum of Saint Anselm, Rome), and Yin-An Chen (Cambridge Centre for Christianity Worldwide)—will share their own visions of theology in a world of diverse centers.

Hosted digitally by the Research Center "Religion and Transformation in Contemporary Society" at the University of Vienna, and co-sponsored by the Lumen Christi Institute in Chicago, the conference will critically explore the implications of David Tracy's theological and cultural vision. This exploration will involve discussions with contributors to "Beyond the Analogical Imagination: The Theological and Cultural Vision of David Tracy," a forthcoming volume from Cambridge University Press in 2023, edited by Barnabas Palfrey and Andreas Telser.

The conference is open to all interested participants and will take place from 13:00 to 16:00 (London), 14:00 to 17:00 (Vienna), and 7:00 to 10:00 (Chicago) on December 4, 2023. Attendees can access the event through this link.

Book launch

Following this, on Tuesday, December 5, 2023, The University of Chicago Divinity School will host the book launch for "Beyond the Analogical Imagination: The Theological and Cultural Vision of David Tracy." The event will be held in-person and livestreamed from the Common Room. The book, edited by Barnabas Palfrey and Andreas Telser, introduces the core themes of David Tracy's thought, critically exploring their relevance for contemporary theology.

The program for the book launch includes an opening by Willemien Otten (University of Chicago), a presentation of the volume by Barnabas Palfrey (Margaret Beaufort Institute of Theology), followed by critical readings from John McCarthy (Loyola University, Chicago), Mary Doak (University of San Diego), and Ryan Coyne (University of Chicago). The event will conclude with a question-and-answer session featuring David Tracy.

The book launch will commence on Tuesday, December 5, 2023, at 12:30 (Chicago), 18:30 (London), and 19:30 (Vienna).
